Coasts Worth Comparing
Choose a region by the kind of day your crew wants, then check whether its wind, distances and harbour pattern support that day.
The Cyclades offer iconic Greek island scenery and a clear sense of progression between ports such as Paros, Naxos and Milos. They can also be exposed to the Meltemi, a summer northerly that is central to the region’s character. For a first trip, this makes flexible routing more valuable than a long wish list.
Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast has a different texture: islands and channels can offer more sheltered choices, while Split, Hvar and Korčula connect sailing days with old urban harbours. A route here can be shaped around short hops, though congestion and berth availability still deserve attention in busy periods.
The British Virgin Islands are commonly associated with straightforward island-to-island legs around Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Norman Island. The scenery is compact and the sailing culture is established, but “easy” never removes the need to review charts, weather and the charter briefing.
The Seychelles, including Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, feel more tropical and spacious. Granite shorelines, reefs and marine habitats deserve a lower-impact approach. Their geography can suit a crew happy to spend time swimming and anchoring rather than collecting towns.
Compare the rhythm, not just the postcard
| Region | Best fit | Planning watchpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Cyclades | Crews who enjoy lively ports and changing conditions | Meltemi exposure and fallback harbours |
| Dalmatian Coast | Mixed town-and-swim itineraries | Berthing choices and channel distances |
| British Virgin Islands | Island-hopping with visible land nearby | Briefing, mooring practice and weather |
| Seychelles | Tropical anchoring and slower days | Reef awareness and island spacing |
